The role of Helicobacter pylori infection in duodenal and gastric ulcer.

There now is unequivocal evidence that Helicobacter pylori is the principal etiological factor in duodenal ulcer disease (Rabenek 1991; Veldhuyzen Van Zanten 1994a). H. pylori is also recognized as an important cause of gastric ulcers (Kuipers 1995a). In this review we evaluate the epidemiological evidence that H.pylori is associated with both duodenal and gastric ulcers. We also review current thinking about the pathophysiological mechanisms by which duodenal or gastric ulcers form.
