Combining Creativity and Expertise

In this paper we examine the issue of combining creativity with expertise and the role of cybernetics in this task. We first briefly summarize some existing work in AI and discuss the relationship between creativity and expertise. The marriage of creativity and expertise results in a kind of heuristic knowledge called strategic knowledge. We advocate the use of a retrospective approach for acquiring strategic knowledge and propose the concept of strategy algebra. The role of cybernetics is then examined; we point out that the retrospective nature of cybernetics implies a kind of predictive power. Therefore cybernetics should be able to guide the process of acquiring strategic knowledge to combine creativity with expertise.
