For a decade or so early this century the Weizmann process for the production of acetone and butanol was of immense economic importance. Its demise was brought about by the growth of the petrochemical industry. However, recent developments in biotechnology and economic changes have stimulated a renewed interest in this form of fermentation which may again become commercially important.
