The efficacy of fine-detail radiography in the evaluation of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

The hands of 25 patients with early or minimal rheumatoid arthritis and 20 controls were examined by (a) conventional radiography using a screen-film combination and (b) fine-detail radiography using fine-grain film with optical magnification (5–12X). Erosions, soft-tissue swelling, and osteoporosis were graded and a radiographic diagnosis was recorded for each set of films. The results indicate that detection of erosive disease is significantly improved with fine-detail radiography in patients with early or minimal rheumatoid arthritis and that improved diagnostic capability is possible with this technique.
