The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed a rule that would require manufacturers to use symbols, such as those shown, with “bioengineered” or “BE,” instead of “GMO,” on labels to indicate that foods contain genetically modified ingredients. The agency is accepting comments on the rule until July 3 and must finalize it by July 29.
