Effect of superplasticisers on the behaviour and properties of alkaline cements

This paper examines the effect of the latest generation of superplasticiser admixtures (based upon vinyl and polyacrylate copolymers) on certain properties and characteristics of alkaline cement pastes and mortars obtained by the alkaline activation of a blast-furnace slag and by the activation of a Class F fly ash. In the case of pastes and mortars derived from the slag subjected to an alkaline activation process, the nature of the admixture affects the activation process and the way in which the strength develops. However, this effect is much less marked in materials that have been obtained from the alkaline activation of fly ash.
