Stability control algorithms for a photonic filter

A practical implementation of an optical filter must have a mechanism to compensate for variations in the component parameters-especially for an infinite-impulse-response (IIR) filter which can enter lasing mode if the poles are too close to the unit circle. Temperature changes are a frequent cause of unwanted drift in the parameters of the various optical components. In this paper, we consider an equation-error method for estimating and optimizing the parameters of a recently developed photonic integrated circuit (PIC). We characterize the effect of temperature-induced changes in the frequency response of the PIC, and describe adaptive compensation algorithms to adjust the filter parameters.
