INVESTIGATIONS OF ENTEROVIRUSES IN THE AETIOLOGY OF ASEPTIC MENINGITIS, POLIOMYELITIS, ENCEPHALITIS AND OTHER SYNDROMES IN QUEENSLAND, 1958 TO 1962

STUDIES of arthropod-borne viruses in Queensland (reviewed recently by Doherty, 1964) led to the isolation of a number of viruses from mosquitoes (including the Tirus of Murray Valley encephalitis), but gave no evidence that any of these viruses were important in causing human infections of the central nervous system on the east coast of Queensland (see Doherty et alii, 1964). Patients referred for this study were also investigated for evidence of infection with other virus groups. The present paper reports the isolation of enterovirus strains in the period 1958 to 1962; some results will also be presented on the isolation of enteroviruses from patients with other diseases, and on the implication of other agents in the mtiology or aseptic meningitis and encephalitis.
