A computational study of twisted linked scroll waves in excitable media

Abstract We investigate numerically the dynamic behavior of three-dimensional twisted linked scroll waves occuring in excitable media modeled by nonlinear reaction diffusion equations. The computations reveal several interesting properties of the organizing center such as rotation of the structure about a symmetric axle, fusion of the singular filaments, expansion and contraction of the curved filaments and unwrithing of a twisted filament. It is generally observed that the organizing center propagates spiral waves for a considerable number of rotations before destabilising either to a plain uncurved scroll or to a steady state solution.
