An Evaluation of Image Quality for Colour Images with Different Spatial Frequency Characteristics

AbstractIt is well known that the sharpness of an image is mainly dependent on the spatial frequency response characteristics of that image. Therefore, the modulation transfer function (MTF) is widely used to evaluate the sharpness component of image quality. However, relatively little is known about the relationship between the MTF of the separate red, green and blue signals and the perceived image quality. In this paper colour images, modulated by Gaussian filters with different spatial frequency characteristics, were produced. The results of experiments conducted using these images showed that the red and green components contribute equally to the quality of colour images.
