Abstract : The report is a comprehensive summary of research and operations experience in wind and water erosion control. It is intended to serve as a broad technical guide for command personnel who are directly involved in the search for effective solutions to severe problems of soil erosion. The report was designed to assist technical personnel in developing new erosion control manuals and detailed technical guides for the use of Base Civil Engineers at U.S. Air Bases in this country and overseas. Specific factors controlling the respective wind and water erosion processes are presented. The development and application of various techniques used currently to evaluate the specific nature of wind and water erosion hazards are also reviewed. Recommendations are presented for further study leading to the formulation of improved soil-loss equations, erodibility indices, and construction scheduling practices. Detailed treatment of present techniques for stabilizing steep construction slopes, gullies, streambanks, shorelines, and sand dunes is given. The application of soil conservation principles and practices is demonstrated for problems of wind and water erosion at one Air Force Base. (Author)
