Implementing Real-time Control Services of Networked Home Appliances

In this paper, we address a framework for building a new service for the home network system (HNS), called real-time appliance control service, which controls and orchestrates multiple networked appliances on specified date and time. We first develop a real-time execution platform, which controls the existing HNS based on the date and time. The platform manages each pair of an appliance operation and the date to be executed as a task. The tasks are concurrently monitored by multi threads. The interfaces of the platform are exhibited as Web services, so that external applications can register, cancel, refer to the tasks easily. We also developed a GUI service editor for non-experts. Finally, we have implemented the proposed system in an actual HNS, and evaluated its effectiveness.
