AbstractIn this article, based on research at the Graduate School of Librarianship. Monash University, the development of education for librarianship in Australia is reviewed, from its early stirrings in 1896, the period of examination (as distinct from education) by the professional body (1944–1980). to the period of tertiary education which began in 1960. The contributions of the professional association, various libraries and library authorities, and of individuals, are reviewed. The centrality of the system of education to the continuation of a profession is acknowledged. A detailed chronology will be published in a later issue.
