Planned and Unplanned Disruptions to Transportation Networks

This paper reviews both theoretical and empirical studies on traffic and behavioral impacts of network disruptions. This paper begins by summarizing types of transportation-related impacts observed and conclusions drawn regarding demand responses and behavioral changes. Then this paper focuses on the methods of data collection and analysis employed, which are crucial for a well-founded study. Comparisons are made regarding the advantage and disadvantage of different research approaches in capturing various facets of travel behavior. The final section summarizes the previous discussion and offers some prospective ideas about capturing the impacts of network disruption.
