Battery management system for Li-Ion batteries in hybrid electric vehicles

The Battery Management System (BMS) is the component responsible for the effcient and safe usage of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) battery pack. Its main activity is to track the State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) of the battery pack, as well as perform maintenance actions such as cell balancing and cooling to provide maximum lifetime for the pack. This work reviews the development of a rigorous electrochemical model for a lithium-ion battery suitable for real-time monitoring, and explores one of the most recent techniques proposed by the literature that enables an accurate SOC estimation by means of an Unscented Kalman Filter. The theoretical framework is accompanied by simulations supporting the validity of the chosen approach
