Reducing the environmental impact of mobile radio networks is a central factor in achieving improved mobile services. The Opera-Net 2 European project with the benefit of broad skills and expertise of its partners (operator, industry and academia) concentrates on this challenge, addressing models, new hardware architectures and designs, new cooling systems, life cycle assessment, material efficiency, combining renewable energy with new energy management and finally field trials. This paper presents an overview of activities undertaken by the project and focuses on a selection of achievements that are of special interest for off-grid power systems using renewable energy and hybrid systems.
