Double-Clad Active MOF and Shaped Optical Fibers for Fiber Lasers and Amplifiers

Double-clad (DC) active fibers are indispensable for modern high-power fiber lasers because they allow pumping of the active single-mode fiber core with small cross-section through the multi-mode inner cladding with large cross-section. To improve the pump efficiency, it is necessary to break the circular symmetry of the inner cladding and one of the possibilities is to make the inner cladding shaped. CO2 laser thermal processing and stack-and-draw techniques were used for preform shaping and preparation and attenuation in resulting fibers was compared.
