Design and implementation of a photovoltaic system using hybrid energy storage

In this paper, a hybrid energy storage system has been implemented using batteries and ultracapacitors. The goal of our research is to manage and to optimize energy flow from sources considering consumer demand. Ultracapacitors are requested during power demand, so batteries function under better conditions by avoiding deep discharges. The advantages of such architecture are demonstrated in this paper: (a) during transient phases, the PV system faces power peaks; (b) batteries are small; (c) batteries lifetime should be improved. Our results were obtained by simulation in order to confirm the performance and advantages of such a system.
