Mechatronic Integration into the Hybrid Powertrain – The Thermal Challenge

This paper gives an overview on the requirements and challenges with the integration of a high power drive inverter into the automotive drivetrain. Harsh thermal and mechanical constraints require new approaches for a 3D system integration, new materials, and new components for the power electronics. A prototype system of an electrical drive unit for hybrid traction is presented that provides unique power density and fits into an existing drivetrain.
