Safe commutation for an AC-DC single phase matrix converter (SPMC) with combination of LC filter and damping resistor

In this paper, simulation of safe commutation switching sequence for an AC-DC single-phase matrix converter (SPMC) with combination of conventional LC filter and damping resistor were proposed. SPMC used the multiple PWM technique as its basic switching operation for synthesizing the required output. The switching sequence was developed in order to provide a continuous path for current flow due to the use of inductive load. Conventional rectifier with LC filter at DC side of the rectifier will create non sinusoidal input current. As a result, it contributes to high THD supply current. The introduction of damping resistor at DC side allows better performance for both output and input of the SPMC. A detail investigation on the rectifier performances related to the input current THD was carried out using the Matlab/Simulink.
