In ancient times we gained access to the insights and experience of our elders mostly through direct contact, either in classrooms or in individual interaction. The formal avenues of published papers and books were invaluable records of the profession’s progress but suffered both from time lags as large as several years, and from the formality of the publication process: bits of casual speculation, anecdotal color, and personal experience in the art of doing science seldom survived the fine sieves of reviewer and editor.
