ESTIMATION OF INTERSECTION TURNING MOVEMENTS FROM APPROACH COUNTS

Current efforts in the use of the estimating technique known as Kruithof's algorithm are summarized. The results are presented of the application of the 'average turning proportions' technique to the algorithm in a study of 58 intersections in Denver, Colorado. Some approaches are suggested in the use of the algorithm in developing turning movements from traffic forecasting model data. Additional areas of research are identified. It is concluded from the study that the use of the algorithm is a useful tool for developing intersection turning movement estimates from traffic forecasting model link volumes in circumstances where turning movement volumes cannot be economically obtained.
