The drinking water distribution network of the city of Erfurt was established in the second half of the 19th century and is now worn and torn to the extent that failure rates and water losses have been increasing during the last decades. Many water mains and pipes are approaching the end of their useful lifetime, in physical as well as economic terms. The increasing cost caused by pipe failures and water losses call for action.
