Input harmonics damping for high power quality applications of matrix converter

The matrix converter (MC) has low input current THD characteristics but in some application areas a much lower THD level is required. Current harmonics due to input LC filter resonance is one of main sources that deteriorates current THD. Suppressing resonant current by additional damping resistor is a simple solution but power loss is not negligible in high power range. This paper proposes an input harmonic damping circuit utilizing voltage clamp circuit of MC system. Since the proposed damping filter compensates mainly resonant current ripple, much smaller current rating devices are needed to achieve harmonics damping control than main MC power circuit. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified through the simulation results.
