Association for computing machinery (ACM)

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is an international scientific and educational association of computer professionals which traces its beginnings to the founding of the Eastern Association for Computing Machinery in 1947, followed in 1954 by the incorporation of The Association for Computing Machinery. The word "machinery" in its name has always bothered some ACM leaders, but all attempts at changes to other names, such as The Association of Computing or The Association for Computer Science, have failed to garner the requisite membership support.
