LIGHTING THE WAY : SWITCH TO POWER-STINGY LEDS IN TRAFFIC SIGNALS SAVES MONEY, IMPROVES ROAD SAFETY

This article describes how communities in California are making the switch to LED (light emitting diodes) technology for traffic signal applications. The advantages of LEDs over traditional incandescent light bulbs are significant. Although LEDs cost more initially, they are cheaper to maintain. Their life span is seven years versus one year for the incandescent lightbulb. LEDs consume 85 percent less electricity than incandescents. In addition, LEDS are brighter than regular bulbs and are more visible in misty and foggy weather.
