Bridge Designed to Last 100 Years will Replace Outer Banks Crossing

The new Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, which will replace the original, constructed in 1962, will cross the Oregon Inlet to link Route 12 from Hatteras to Bodie Island along North Carolina's Outer Banks. In order to save time and money, it will be built using standardized elements and will be designed to last 100 years, using methods that will minimize the effect on subaqueous vegetation at both ends of the bridge. Innovative design features and proven, reliable methodologies are key to the bridge's long service life, as discussed in this article.
