Trams are drawing attention as the new-public transportation due to its accessibility, economical advantage and eco-friendly characteristics. Since trams operate on main roads unlike subway, trams are more exposed to dusts, rain and snow. If open type traction motors are applied to trams, the inside of traction motors can be contaminated by dust in airflow for cooling, and finally the insulation of windings will be damaged by dust or debris.
To avoid such situations, traction motors of totally enclosed type are applied to most of trams. In contrast with open type traction motors which cool off inside of motors, total enclosed motors cooled down by cooling exterior frame of motors. In this case, cooling fins or air fan blowing to the exterior of motors are applied.
In this paper, designing cooling structure of traction motors with frame cooling by air blow applied to low floor tram will be discussed.
