TRAFFIC CALMING THROUGH TRAFFIC SIGNAL REMOVAL - CITY OF LESLIE

The City of Leslie desired to modernize the only two signals in the city as part of the Bellevue Street improvement, financed by the Federal Highway Administration. However, warrant studies revealed that neither of the signals were warranted. It was recommended that the signal located at main downtown intersection be replaced by a four-way stop, and the other by a well regulated school flasher. Some city officials and a number of citizens objected to these recommendations, but after several meetings, the city council approved the removals. The four-way stop and the school flashers were then installed as part of the project. Unfortunately, no "before and after" speed studies were conducted, but city officials believe that Bellevue Street is calmer, now that motorists are no longer speeding up to the "green". The citizen complaints have all but disappeared.
