Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE) is a novel communication protocol which is mainly used for information exchange in cooperative vehicle infrastructure system. In this paper, the vehicle to infrastructure communication performance of a WAVE supported device is analyzed. First, the state of art of WAVE communication performance test is presented from the simulation and field test aspects. Then, the WAVE protocol stack and IEEE 802.11p protocol are introduced. Based on a WAVE prototype device - DENSO WSU, vehicle to infrastructure communication field tests are deployed on a ring test site at Tongji University campus. Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI), Packet Loss Rate (PLR), Packet Error Rate (PER) and throughput are analyzed under the speed distributions of 0 km/h, 10 km/h, 20 km/h and 30 km/h. Finally, conclusion is drawn that the WAVE prototype device supports vehicle to infrastructure communication applications in a low-speed environment.
