BRIDGE SCHIESSBERGSTRASSE - EXAMPLE FOR A PERMANENT MONITORED STRUCTURE

Monitoring of buildings - especially of bridges - gets more and more important. The reasons for this are the increase of the heavy goods traffic, of air pollution and in precipitations, de- icing salts and the fact that prices for traditional maintenance and repairs are going up. The bridge Schiessbergstrasse in Leverkusen represents a new generation of building structures having a perfect solution for this kind of problems: prestressing with "intelligent tendons", monitoring of the stress strain behaviour of the concrete, chemical sensors, and - in the case of the bridge Schiessbergstrasse additionally a reinforcement with epoxy coating and foil sealing with polyurethane of the bridge deck. All sensors are controlled by a personal computer and all data of the bridge are transmitted via phoneline to the office of the client. An intelligent data processing compares the measured values with the set points. In a measuring chamber - situated in the abutment - all data are processed by a personal computer in that way that the client is able to recognize immediately all important changes. There is the possibility of direct communication between the client and the building by means of a phone line. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 850834.
