Characterization of SNMP MIB modules

The Internet management framework separates the management protocol from the management information manipulated by the management protocol. While several studies have been published about the protocol behavior, little is known about the characteristics of the management information carried by the protocol. This paper presents an empirical analysis of standardized and proprietary management information base (MIB) module sets. The analysis reveals key characteristics of the MIB module sets and the MIB engineering processes deployed by different organizations.
