Research on the mechanical characteristic of a novel building-block transverse flux permanent-magnetic motor (B-TFPM)

A novel building-block transverse flux permanent-magnetic motor (B-TFPM) structure was analyzed. The motor stator electromagnets structure is decoupled. Like “building-blocks”, the whole motor is consisted of series elementary blocks. The two features overcome majority TFPMs' shortcomings of complex structures and the difficult manufacture. The motor multi-phase stators are placed in the same circle, which reduces the motor axial size. Therefore it is more suitable for wheel hub driving. The motor mechanical characteristic was deduced based on its voltage and torque equations. Its result indicates the B-TFPM could output big torques at low speed and maintain constant power approximately at high speed, which conform to the electric vehicle (EV) requirement for In-wheel motors. On this basis, a mechanical characteristic adjustment method based on flux-linkages was proposed and the feasibility of this method was verified by simulation.
