Wide-area monitoring of electromechanical oscillations in the nordic power system: practical experience

This study addresses different approaches to detection of critical oscillatory modes. It utilises fast-sampled signals captured with phasor measurement units and a wide-area monitoring platform. The methods employed here are model-based. Resulting models yield the actual power system dynamics and can be used for monitoring purposes as well as tuning the stabilising power oscillation damping controllers. Results achieved in practice in cooperation with transmission system operators are shown. The achieved results are compared with those known from existing large-scale non-linear models. A newly developed signal-based ‘power system analyses and control’ tool is presented.
