Plasticity in the transfer of gaze

Abstract In order for visual exploration of the environment to proceed efficiently and with the minimum of interruption, shifts in gaze must be accomplished with both accuracy and speed. The execution of these movements involves at least three separate subsystems within the brain. Each of these subsystems operates in an ‘open-loop’ mode for much, if not all, of the time to achieve the necessary speed and each relies on visually mediated, long-term learning processes to achieve the necessary accuracy.
