WIRELESS IMAGE TRANSMISSION USING COMBINED MULTIPLE DESCRIPTIONS AND SPACE-TIME TRANSMIT DIVERSITY *

In this paper, we consider a combined multiple description/Alamouti’s space-time coding for image transmission over a MIMO flat-fading wireless channel. We also propose a bit-correction scheme over description estimation for the lost description, which can correct bit errors based on the source statistical information such as variance. Simulation results show that the quality of the reconstructed image can be significantly improved over only using either multiple descriptions or space-time coding. The proposed scheme provides source diversity in addition to channel diversity due to use of multiple description coding together with space-time coding.
