Energy Management Systems for Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids

Abstract This book chapter aims to investigate energy management system (EMS) solutions for hybrid AC/DC microgrids specifically for isolated microgrids in the presence of conventional AC sources such as diesel and renewable resources such as PV, wind, and battery energy storage. This chapter proposes an advanced EMS solution for isolated microgrids in which operating factors such as reliable, flexible, and cost-effective are taken into account. Hence, this chapter primarily reviews the necessity of having specific EMS systems for remote microgrids that need to be in accordance with remote community techno-economic factors as well as cultural and environmental factors. It then explains the main challenges of existing EMS solutions in the market and presents the main features of a user-friendly cost-effective EMS for remote microgrids. To test the accuracy and the performance of proposed EMS, 33-node AC/DC microgrid was tested in an islanded mode for 96 time-intervals, representing a full operating day.
