Integration of User-Centred Design and Product Development Process within a Virtual Environment: Practical case KVALIVE

The role pf packaging is not solely to protect the product and be an information carrier; it has an important role in brand building as well. The tactile properties of packaging have effect on the product image. At KCL, a method for describing and evaluating the tactile properties of printed products has been developed. In this project, the method was developed at VTT further to cover packaging. The development work was analogous to the Easy-to-open test for packaging (VTT5631-09). The developed method was utilized in describing the tactile properties of prototype packaging. The survey was part of larger project Food packaging in the future, which targets are to innovate and develop new food packaging concepts to the future consumers. The method that has been developed in the project is so called descriptive analyzing method, which produces both descriptive data and measurement data on the central tactile properties of packaging. As a result of the development work, a vocabulary for describing the surface feel and handling properties of packaging was identified. The evaluation panel, which was trained in this project, evaluated the magnitudes of the tactile properties repeatably using the vocabulary. The developed method was used to study the five prototypes created in the project Food packaging in the future: three On-the-go samples with windows and two Biostartti samples. As a result, tactile profiles that communicate the similarities and differences between the studied samples were created. Packaging design and the materials used had the strongest effects on the shapes of the profiles. Smaller size On-the-go packaging fit better into hand than larger size. Breaking tendency of the packaging was mainly affected by the packaging design; however, the size of the packaging mattered also. The samples made out of glossy board felt smoother and stickier than the matt surface sample. The visual appearance of the packaging did not affect the tactile evaluations.
