Gravity Wave Induced Fluctuation of OH Airglow Profile

A model for the effect of nonlinear propagating gravity wave on OH airglow profile is set up by using the Full Implicit Continuous Eulerian (FICE) scheme and the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIME-GCM). Analysis shows that the shorter vertical wavelength gravity wave significantly influences the peak layer of OH volume emission rate when the gravity wave propagates through the emission layer. In some cases it induces a double-peak structure in OH volume emission rate profile, suggesting that the non-linear propagation of gravity wave is a direct cause to the double-peak structure of OH airglow. In addition, the profile of OH airglow is sensitive to the breaking of gravity wave at mesospause. These results can explain some observations, and can provide a good indication for studying the characteristic of nonlinear gravity wave by using OH airglow measurement.
