An Analysis of Success Factors in College Computer Science

AbstractIn the past decade, many studies have been conducted to determine factors that may influence success in computer science. Researchers typically cite academically measurable areas, such as mathematics proficiency or standardized test scores, as the major predictors of success. In this study, researchers extended an earlier study that investigated new factors, such as high school computer science, gender, class year, and work, on computer science success. In particular, the type of prior high school experience was a major concern. Researchers again confirmed that high school computer science as an entity itself can have a very positive effect on college computer science. Moreover, the teaching methodology rather that the content of the high school course, seemed to be the major component of the high school experience that contributed the most to success in college.
