Nanogrids with energy storage for future electricity grids

Increased penetration of distributed renewable energy sources to the grid has enabled to develop independent smaller power systems such as microgrids. This paper focuses on nanogrids, which are basic building blocks of microgrids. The paper first describes the nanogrid concept, its key components and benefits of nanogrids. Potential markets that can benefit from nanogrids are provided afterwards. Finally, the two use cases developed address typical examples of nanogrids and show the potential value streams that can be obtained by the energy storage component of the nanogrid.
