Applications of artificial intelligence in Japan

Abstract This article presents a comprehensive report on the recent research and development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Japan, focusing especially on industrial applications. First, historical background of AI research and the future trends of AI marketing in Japan are reported. Then, industrial applications of AI are introduced with respect to three fields: expert systems, machine translation, and applications of fuzzy set theory. Finally, problems for future research projects are outlined.
