Open-loop control of a global instability in a swirling jet by harmonic forcing: A weakly nonlinear analysis

Highly swirling flows, while being beneficial for many industrial applications, are often prone to an instability that precesses against the mean flow swirl. The effect of external harmonic forcing on this unstable mode is considered via a weakly nonlinear analysis. Forcings that rotate with the mean flow are found to be destabilizing, whereas forcings that rotate against the mean flow are generally stabilizing. These effects are caused by the mean flow modifications induced by the forcings.
