This chapter begins with an explanation and critical thinking perspective concerning the increasingly popular term “resilience.” The resilience movement is covered first because it has gained much attention in the public and private sectors and confusion has developed over its meaning and how it relates to risk management, business continuity planning, emergency management, critical infrastructure protection, and other concepts and efforts applied to the challenges of threats and hazards. Once a critical thinking approach is applied to the budding concept of resilience, the more entrenched concepts (e.g., risk management, business continuity planning, etc.) that contain a wealth of history and information are explained.
