Comparison of free and total chlorine measurement methods in municipal wastewaters

Accurate and precise determination of chlorine residuals is essential for the assessment of disinfection efficiency. In this study, various methods for the analysis of free available chlorine (FAC) and total residual chlorine (TRC) were compared in chlorinated municipal wastewaters. Rates of interferences in the measurements also were determined. The amperometric titration and iodometric II methods were the most reproducible and the iodometric I and potentiometric electrode methods were the least reproducible for the measurement of TRC. The rate of interference in the measurement of FAC by the N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine method was similar to the rate of interference from inorganic monochloramine
