A New Design Approach for Axial-Field Electrical Machines

The laminated core of an axial-field electrical machine is usually made of a strip-wound circular core which is machined to form the slots. This paper presents a new design and method of construction for the laminated cores of axial-field electrical machines. The laminated core, viz. armature or stator core, is sandwiched between two field cores. As there is no yoke in the laminated core at the center of the machine, there is a considerable saving in the core material in the new design. The basic construction of the machine is described and the design and other data of an experimental axial-field synchronous machine and such a d.c. machine are given. Comparison is made between the overall dimensions of such a machine and that of a conventional machine of the same rating.
