Design of integrated Latext: Halal detection text using OCR (Optical character recognition) and web service

The problem of Halal product detection tracking is becoming a crucial issue today. The validity of Halal status authentication claimed by product manufacturer may be inadequate. There are many applications developed to help to detect the Halal products. But, sometimes it results wrong. This is because of the unsynchronized system. There are some data that are expired. And because of the unsynchronized system, the expired data need to be updated manually. This research proposes the system that can be an alternative way to solve that problem. There are front-end and back-end system designed. The communication between front-end and back-end use the web service technology. This aims to make the data accessed from both systems can be synchronized well. Besides, this research also uses the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology in its front-end system. This technology is used because this technology only uses the camera from the mobile device to recognize the character of Halal products and there is no another research that implements this technology before. The text recognized by OCR will be checked in the back-end system using web service. This research aims to build the integrated system which can help Moslem people in detecting Halal products based on solely its product name provided in the packaging. The test result shows that the application developed can detect the Halal product based on the label written. This application can be an alternative way to identify the Halal product using the mobile smartphone.
