An AHP-TOPSIS based Decision Support Model for Selecting Biometric System

In this paper, a decision support model is proposed to help individuals in selecting appropriate biometric technology based on personalized preferences. The proposed model uses methods: (i) Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and (ii) Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) under multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) environment. AHP is applied to calculate the relative weights of biometric characteristics (decision criteria) and TOPSIS is applied to rank the biometric technologies for final selection. The model considers eight biometric technologies: face, ear, iris, fingerprint, voice, hand vein, hand geometry and signature, and selects best technology based on the seven traits (factors): universality, uniqueness, permanence, collectability, performance, acceptability and resistance to circumvention. To demonstrate the methodological process of decision-support model, an example of biometric technology selection is illustrated.
