Dealing withSemantic Interoperation ofData

Thereisa realpromiseofachieving technical interoperation oflarge datasets frommanywidely dispersed sources. Where suchshared access isachieved wefinddifferences inthemeanings oftheterms usedto describe thedqta(themetadata orschemas) andthe terms usedinthedatathemselves: thedescriptors, the names, theclassifiers, andalsointhedatastructures, i.e., thehierarchies, thescopeandthelevel ofdetail represented inthedatafiles. Wepresent ameansto interoperate whenterninologies differ bypresenting an algebra overontologies. Thoseontologies cover terms usedinthedescriptive metadata andwithin thedata files themselves. Useoftheconcepts inourapproach involves twophases: compiling theterminological matches, using expert-mediated tools, andexecuting interoperation processes, focused onaspecific application subsequently.
