A New User Interface Design for Giving Lectures and Presentations

Integrating advanced input devices, such as digitizer tablets and interactive electronic whiteboards, into a classroom or lecture hall is not enough to improve traditional teaching styles. The software design of the interface has to be adapted to the specific task and situation as well in order to provide intuitive and easy access to the offered functionality. In this paper, we propose an interface design which considers the special requirements resulting from the task of giving a presentation or lecture using advanced input devices. The introduced design is optimized for penbased input. Only small modifications are needed in order to apply it to any screen size ranging from very small PDAs to large interactive electronic whiteboards. Our approach is based on common user interaction paradigms for pen-based computing such as pie menus and pen gesture interpretation.
